Mountain Retreat Basement Lit for Entertainment

Location: Colorado - Private Residence

Lighting Systems: Pipeline Modular Suspension

Lighting Designer: Kristen Bland

Designing lighting for a residential basement rarely comes with 14-foot ceilings, expansive mountain views, and the expectation that the space will host large-scale gatherings and wellness retreats. But that was exactly the challenge presented by this Colorado home nestled in the Rocky Mountains. With exposed ductwork, no option for recessed lighting, and a strong desire to preserve sightlines to the surrounding landscape, Lighting Designer Kristen Bland needed a solution that was architectural, expressive, and intentional without overwhelming the space. The answer came in the form of PureEdge Lighting's Pipeline Modular Suspension system, used to create a sculptural, geometric lighting installation that defines zones, delivers functional illumination, and elevates the entire basement experience.
Most lighting designers work off architectural drawings with exact measurements, but the client bought a pre-existing home that didn't have the drawings available. Bland explains, "Usually, I'm receiving plans from an architect and then I'm designing off of their plans that are accurate. I didn't have that, so for this project, I had to go in and actually measure and lay out the whole space in my program. Bluebeam software is what I use for all the lighting designs that I do. While still getting dimensions, I had to work around beams and HVAC systems. The goal was to work around those without it looking like I had to work around them. I wanted to try and incorporate them as much as possible, and the goal was to just get this really cool 3D effect."
The USA Patented Pipeline 1 (176° Lens) Suspension Rotatable Modular System is a sleek, low-profile lighting solution featuring 1.25" diameter diffused LED tubes and a variety of connectors that enable highly customizable configurations. Designed for versatility, this plug-and-play system allows users to run channels along exposed ceilings, turn corners, or even climb walls using L, T, X, Y, and flexible connectors. With adjustable 360° rotatable channels, it offers both direct and indirect lighting options, making it ideal for creative installations. The system supports remote power supplies up to 100 watts (End Feed) or dual 100 watts (Center Feed) and comes in lengths ranging from 12" to 120" (10 feet). It delivers high lumen output up to 1313 lumens per foot, with three wattage options (5, 7, or 10 watts), a wide 176° lens and 143° beam spread, and impressive efficiency. Users can choose from nine color temperature options ranging from 2200K to 5700K, including Warm Dim (27D and 30D), all with high CRI values up to 95+. Designed for longevity, the system also boasts a 60,000-hour lamp life. Finishes include Satin Black, Chrome, Satin Nickel, White, Satin Brass with Black Canopy, and Satin Brass with White Canopy.
Bland continues, "The three main zones were the bar, seating area, and an area where they are putting a pool table in. When you walk into the space, you can definitely tell the emphasis on those areas. Those are really where I tried to highlight and make those areas a little bit heavier with the Pipeline. Working on the design was a collaborative effort with PureEdge, I told the team the heights I wanted, color coded everything then gave them my 2D drawings and they would give back 3D renders, we'd make adjustments together."
Bland concludes, "It's pretty easy to specify PureEdge if you're looking for something that's different, or they can come up with something that will make it work to give you the design that you really want. The designs are out of the box thinking, and I feel like other manufacturers are looking at PureEdge for inspiration. The team was really great to work with, and I feel from a decorative element to a recessed element, PureEdge is the leader when it comes to architectural type lighting."
